How did he manage to be the only Frankish Templar to be alive after the battle of Hattin ? Guy went to jail for he was spared by Saladin for he was a King.
Ridefort died Oct 4th 1189 near Acre. The Templars didn't have a Grand Master for over a year after his death, this could be a reason why there was such a confusion on the island of Cyprus during this time. The next Grand Master was Robert de Sablé from 1189 to 1193 and he spent a lot of time changing the rules of the Order for such things which happened during Ridefort not to happen again.

As to King Philippe IV's machinations : it is so unfortunate to tell all of you that the King was a victim of somebody in his Court. The unscrupulous and manipulative person managed so well to hide all his deeds that nobody could ever find anything. The King was duped and the Pope was duped too by the same person who started such a terrible story which lasted years ending by the death of the Templars burned at the stake and by the suppression of the Order in 1312.
This is how "a lie" made at such a level of a power holder (the King of France here) can become a tragedy.
I am preparing a longer comment to explain to you all "the what and hows" it all happened. It is another "case" regarding a type of person.

Aurélie Firman

Aure Leehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12242771985958103462noreply@blogger.com
