Chronicles usually speak of "the brothers Lusignan" and there were four: Hugh, Geoffrey, Aimery and Guy. The Lusignans were, at the time, already in rebellion and Henry II was soon reconciled with them. The destruction of Lusignan castle was in that context. Certainly the Plantagenets did not bare a grudge against Guy; Richard I, the Lionheart, backed his claim to the throne of Jerusalem even after he had led the Christian armies to disasterous defeat at Hattin. See my short essay on Guy.Helena P. Guy de Lusignan is the same man who attempted to kidnap next door neighbor Eleanor of Aquitaine, Queen of England, only succeeding to kill her defender the Earl of the Aquitaine armies. For this Guy was banished, his castle razed. Too bad Sibylla didn't have Facebook to look Guy up.

Ironically, the husband Sibylla missed was a bachelor of the perfect age - Richard Lionheart, who lead the 3rd crusade to retake Jerusalem. Unfortunately, Henri II his father had Archbishop Thomas Becket brutally murdered and all of Europe was up in arms. Also unfortunately, Richard's mother, Eleanor of Aquitaine was abducted by Henri and thrown in prison for 16 years. The irony of ironies was Eleanor fought in the 2nd Crusade and knew Sibylla's grandmother Melisende of Jerusalem quite well, and met Sibylla's father Almaric while recovering in Jerusalem.Mark Beaulieuhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05542348600565030318noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8683681702039130081.post-75818919606910038252015-08-21T10:23:30.018-07:002015-08-21T10:23:30.018-07:00Wow!
